Las Cruces Celebrates National Black Cat Day!

Staff Report / LasCruceslocal.org

The City of Las Cruces is celebrating National Black Cat Day by sharing photos of its employees with their black cats. Residents are encouraged to visit the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley to adopt a furry friend.

According to the city, black cats represent about 13% of shelter cats and often wait longer to be adopted. In various cultures, black cats are seen as symbols of good fortune, and they can belong to different breeds, such as the Bombay and Maine Coon.

A notable mention is Mr. Nero, who was the library cat at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, now known as the Branigan Cultural Center, during the 1960s and 70s.
