**Officer-Involved Shooting in Hobbs Leaves One Dead**

Hobbs, NM – An officer-involved shooting on January 6, 2025, resulted in the death of 28-year-old Jesus Rubio, from Las Cruces. The incident occurred during a traffic stop initiated by the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) near 209 Marland Street in Hobbs at approximately 6:00 p.m.

According to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, Rubio was driving a white Dodge Charger and initially did not comply when officers activated their emergency lights and sirens. Eventually, Rubio pulled the vehicle over but exited his car despite commands from officers to remain inside. Upon exiting, Rubio kept his right hand behind his back. Officers issued additional commands for Rubio to show his hands, which he did not obey immediately.

Rubio reportedly raised his arms in a motion as if pointing a firearm while walking toward the officers. Both officers discharged their firearms, striking Rubio. Emergency medical services arrived on the scene and transported Rubio to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police officials confirmed that no firearm was recovered from the scene. The names of the officers involved will remain confidential until interviews are completed in accordance with protocol. The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident. This includes documenting evidence, collecting statements from all parties involved, and compiling a detailed report to forward to the district attorney’s office for review. The district attorney is responsible for determining whether the officers' actions were justified in this incident.

No officers were injured during the encounter. Further updates or conclusions regarding the incident will depend on the review process conducted by the district attorney’s office.
