**New Mexico State Police Mourn the Loss of Beloved K-9 Leo**

Las Cruces, NM—The New Mexico State Police have announced the passing of K-9 officer Leo following a battle with aggressive bone cancer. K-9 Leo, who served faithfully alongside his handler for three years, died on February 8, 2025.

Born to serve, K-9 Leo was diagnosed with cancer on July 11, 2024, leading to his retirement from active duty on November 14, 2024. During his years of service, K-9 Leo patrolled the southern border areas of New Mexico, proving to be an invaluable partner in combating drug trafficking.

According to the New Mexico State Police, K-9 Leo played a critical role in keeping harmful substances off the streets. His efforts contributed to the seizure of approximately:

- 20 kilograms of fentanyl

- 67 kilograms of methamphetamines

- 50 kilograms of cocaine

- 8 kilograms of heroin

These actions likely saved countless lives and showcased K-9 Leo's exceptional abilities and unwavering dedication.

Following his retirement, K-9 Leo remained in the care of his handler, maintaining a close bond until his final moments. He will be buried in Las Cruces, where his contributions to public safety will be remembered with gratitude.

K-9 Leo's work and heroism have left a lasting impact on the New Mexico community, and his legacy will endure as a symbol of service and partnership between officers and their loyal K-9 companions.
