Law Enforcement Demands Juvenile Justice Reform

Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen held a press conference in Albuquerque today with several law enforcement leaders to discuss juvenile crime in New Mexico. Present at the event were District Attorney Sam Bregman, Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe, New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler, DPS Secretary Jason Bowie, Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story, and Española Police Department Chief Mizel Garcia.

During the conference, Sheriff Allen noted that the state has a history of leniency towards offenders. District Attorney Bregman pointed out that current juvenile laws have not been updated since before the creation of the iPhone, stating that this issue was negatively affecting communities and youth.

The group called on the New Mexico Legislature to modernize juvenile justice laws, close legal loopholes, and prioritize public safety while considering reform.
